My Mother's Day Gifts... = )

Just had to share with you my charming Mother's Day gifts from Breezy & Brennan.  They were perfect!  First...

I should tell you...I've always loved flowers in a Mason jar, but this was precious!  I love the way that ribbon and button dress it up.  She added that sweet mini clothespin and made the card attached with scrapbooking software.  Isn't that a great idea!? = )

Then...this!  I absolutely LOVE it!  She stained the wood plaques and then Mod-Podged pink paper to the front which she distressed.  She added a slight antique coloring to the photos and added a beautiful quote (chosen by Brennan), then embellished with ribbon and buttons.  The photos she chose are some of my favorites.  This is truly an absolute treasure!

I've always told you Breezy and her family were talented and creative.  Over the years, I've seen her create some wonderful and very special gifts for Brennan.  It was especially meaningful to receive something so special for my own!  Apparently, her inspiration for both gifts came from things she has seen in blogworld. Yes, she too has been bitten by the blogging bug!  (I love it!)  She has been having lots of fun exploring & getting all sorts of ideas.  = )

Oh and lest I forget!  Here is the beautiful quote:

A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.  ~Washington Irving.

Hope you had a wonderful and special Mother's Day, too!

Happy Mothers Day!

I was privileged to spend yesterday celebrating Mother's Day with my sweet Mom.  We had such a great time!  I'm beyond grateful He blessed me with a Mom that is tender, kind, caring, compassionate, fun, flexible, talented and so very easy to love.  What a gift!  I pray His most abundant blessings for her.

A little later, I'll be seeing my sweet boy and daughter-in-love...I absolutely cannot wait!  It's my first Mother's Day with two kids!  ; )  They've been in town this week, working with the college seminar team which has provided a few bonus visits (the greatest Mother's Day gift, ever!)  What a treat it has been and how I love them so!

Tonight, we'll honor my  mother-in-love, Millie.  She too is a treasure to me and I truly thank God for her.  At nearly 90 years of age, every Mother's Day we have together is a special gift.

In the quieter moments, I can't help but think of so many Mom's I know, in all walks and stages of life...

* those joyously celebrating their first Mother's Day and those whose babies are preparing leave the nest;
* those who now care for their aging Mothers as she once cared for them;
* those spending Mother's Day without their own dear Mom;
* those whose arms still ache to hold a baby of their own and those who were privileged to hold babies that have now returned to Heaven;
* those separated by distance and those separated by broken relationships;
* those who gave birth to babies that will be loved and nurtured by arms other than their own;
* those with a house full and those with just one....
I'm praying for you today.

A friend wrote this morning and I couldn't agree more...next to salvation and my husband, there has been no greater gift or privilege in my life than being a Mom.  I truly can't thank Him enough.

Hope your day is special in every way!  Savor every moment, every hand-picked flower, every hand-made card, every sticky kiss, every "I love you"  They make the sweetest of memories as days go by.

Happy 2010!!!

Happy New Year, sweet friends! Hope you had a wonderful time ringing in the new year, whether out with friends or family, or in your "comfy clothes" at home. We had been invited to spend New Year's Eve with Breezy's family, but my sweet hubby has been sick for several days, so we spent a nice, quiet evening at home instead.

Like many of you, I've been thinking about my life in the coming year -- things I'd like to do, places I'd like to go & ways I'd like to grow. In these first few hours of the new year, I'm asking God to guide my thoughts, my steps, my words and my walk as I journey with Him through 2010. His timeless promises and past faithfulness have proven I can fully and completely trust in Him. There is truly no greater gift.

I have to thank Him once again for the countless ways He's blessed me through so many of you in 2009! Oh, and that reminds me! I'd like to say Congratulations to my buddy Sue of The Time of our Lives! Tom drew her name just after midnight from among the comments from the last post. She has a great blog and she is such a kind encourager to me. If you haven't yet met her, please stop by and say "Hello!"

Earlier tonight (or last night by now), Tom and I were talking about New Year's Eve 10 years ago...as we were on the verge of "Y2K." Remember that? Here's a photo we took that night. Thinking on how much our lives have changed since then...only God, friends...only God. = )

Hope you enjoy the rest of this long weekend!

25 Years Ago Today...

...I walked down the aisle and with great joy, married this wonderful man. He is the most precious earthly gift God has ever given to me. He's my sweetheart, companion, dearest friend and love of my life. He brings unspeakable joy and inexpressable love to every day. I am so very blessed.

One morning about a year ago, I woke up and walked into our kitchen...bedhead, no makeup and pajamas. It was very early and the house was quite dark except for one small light. I thought Tom was still sleeping, but a few moments later, he walked into the room with something behind his back. He said, "I made something for you." With that, he extended his hand to reveal a cd he had entitled "Tom's Heart for Tracy." A lump formed in my throat as I placed it in the player. I listened intently. As the songs he had chosen began to play, the tears began to flow. He wrapped me in a hug and we listened together. Before we knew it, we were "dancing." I don't mean elaborate, deliberate dancing...I mean that sweet, soft swaying of two contented souls. It was a moment forever etched in my heart.

As I celebrate the love we share today, one of those songs especially comes to mind. Written by Steven Curtis Chapman, it's entitled, "We Will Dance."

I've watched the sunrise in your eyes,
and I've seen the tears fall like the rain.
You've seen me fight so brave and strong,
you've held my hand when I'm afraid.

We've watched the seasons come and go;
we'll see them come and go again.
But in winter's chill, or summer's breeze,
One thing will not be changin'...

CHORUS:
We will dance;
When the sun is shining, in the pouring rain.
We'll spin and we'll sway, and we will dance,
when the gentle breeze, becomes a hurricane.
The music will play, and I'll take your hand
and hold you close to me...
and we...will dance.

Sometimes it's hard to hold you tight;
sometimes we feel so far apart.
Sometimes we dance as one,
and feel the beating of each other's heart.

Some days the dance is slow and sweet,
some days we're bouncing off the walls.
No matter how this world may turn,
our love will keep us from fallin' and we...

We will dance;
When the sun is shining, in the pouring rain.
We'll spin and we'll sway, and we will dance,
when the gentle breeze, becomes a hurricane.
The music will play, and I'll take your hand
and hold you close to me...
and we...will dance.

The music will play,
and I'll hold you close and I won't let you go;
even when our steps grow weak and slow...

Still I'll take your hand,
and hold you close to me...
and we...will dance.

Happy Anniversary Sweetie! I love you beyond words and I cherish you with all my heart. I look sweetly forward to morning dances in the kitchen with you, all the days of my life.

I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine.

At Last!!!

Hello friends! Hope this finds you well. Can't believe it's been almost 3 weeks since my last post. During that time, we enjoyed a wonderful family vacation in Florida. We arrived back home last Sunday and literally hit the ground running. It has been a very busy week! Now that things seem to be slowing down a bit, I want to share with you some vacation highlights.

I have to be honest. Initially, I really didn't want to take this trip. Although things had settled down somewhat with my Dad, and my niece did not need surgery, it still seemed like a bad time to go away. Tom has been awaiting word for three months now about a possible outsourcing of his job, Brennan's wedding is only a couple of months away, etc.
Tom reasoned if his job were outsourced, he could very well lose any vacation days he had earned and this would be our last opportunity to take a vacation with Brennan before his wedding. Lastly, he reminded me of our 25th wedding anniversary this year. (We had agreed a few months back to postpone any big plans to celebrate until after Brennan and Breezy's wedding.) Tom persisted. I called my sister, who confidently assured me things were well under control at home. Soon, the Lord begin to set my mind at ease about the other details. Things fell into place and before long, we were boarding a plane to Florida.

If I told you everything went perfectly (without a hitch),that would be untrue. Like most vacations, there were a few disappointments. HOWEVER, in the big picture, those things pale in comparison to the incredible memories we made on this trip. We spent several days in Naples, Florida, visiting our favorite beaches, spending hours talking and playing in the pool, enjoying great dinners, etc.

We then headed north for a few days to Longboat Key and surrounding areas. As it turns out, Brianna (Brennan's fiancee) was there with her Mom visiting her Grandparents at the same time (Tom and I had no idea of this when we planned our trip.) We spent several days doing things together with them, which proved to be great bonding time for our two families. Brianna's Grandparents have been coming to Longboat Key every summer for 10 years now, so they know about all the wonderful restaurants and fun things to do. One of their absolute favorite things to do (and also one of ours) is simply enjoying the gorgeous beach, particularly at sunset. We spent hours walking, shelling, playing in the water and talking.

Truly, the most amazing memory of the entire trip was something I can still hardly believe we did. Tom, Brennan and I went PARASAILING!! It was incredible! Before this trip, I would have NEVER thought of doing such a thing. First, because I'm afraid of heights and second, I can't swim! It was Tom's idea, so he was very excited. Brennan loves adventure, so he was definitely onboard. With the assurance I would have a life jacket and the potential we could all go up together, I agreed. (Scared or not, I didn't want to miss the opportunity to experience something so exciting with my guys!) Now, after having done it, let me just tell you it was one of the most amazing things I've ever done. I would do it again, in a heartbeat! The winds were favorable that particular day, so all three of us were able to go up together. You may be surprised to know it was incredibly quiet and peaceful. Believe it or not, we were able to talk to one another the entire time in a normal tone of voice. AMAZING! We all loved it and unanimously decided the experience is in our top 5 family memories of all time. If you've never done it, I highly recommend it.

This truly turned out to be one of our best family vacations, I'm so very glad we went. If you'd like to see some of our photos, click on the album below...enjoy!

52 years ago today...

…that sweet hubby of mine was born. What an amazing gift and blessing! I’m privileged to have shared this day with him for 26 of those years (exactly half his life so far!)

One of many things I’ve learned in all that time is how much he dislikes being the center of attention for occasions such as this. He gets great joy in celebrating others, but when it comes to his special day, nothing makes him happier than a quiet, low-key celebration at home. In keeping with his wishes, I will see that he is showered (in an understated ways, of course) with much love and many blessings all throughout the day. It’s a joy and privilege that I eagerly anticipate each year. = )

To my dear husband and most cherished friend,

How I love you, Sweetheart! I thank God for the gift of your life and the immeasurable joy it brings to me. I pray your day is filled to overflowing with love and the sweetest of blessings.

XOXOXOXO,
me

2009 Scripture Memory Challenge #10

Be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. Deuteronomy 4:9 (NIV)

Greetings, sweet friends!

If you're a frequent reader, you know I'm taking part in the 2009 Scripture Memory Challenge with Beth Moore (and a few thousand others!) For those who may be unfamiliar...twice a month (the 1st & 15th), we've committed to memorize (or attempt to memorize) a new passage of scripture. Each time, Beth shares the verse of her choosing. We are welcome to memorize hers , or we can select one of our own. Up until now, my verses have been of my choosing. In fact, today I had a verse already in mind. However, when I read Beth's scripture, it struck a chord deep in my heart and I knew this was one I needed to memorize.

As she explained, there are many instances in God's Word where He tells us we are not to forget what He has done. It's sadly so easy to do...at least for me. I've experienced some absolutely incredible answers to prayer in my life. I've received blessings beyond comprehension. I've watched God's hand change situations I thought were utterly unchangeable. Even so...over time I begin to forget.

I have such respect for those who keep journals. I always intended to do that, I just never did. I believe that's why blogging is so close to my heart. As God stirs my recollection of some of the blessings I've experienced, it provides an avenue by which to share them. Each retelling has the potential for encouraging others who may be walking a similar path. But God's divine design provides yet another benefit. Reliving stories of my faith creates in me a renewed sense of trust and awe for my Savior as I remember His faithfulness. That's a worthy remembering, indeed.

God's Story is certainly worth telling, but so is yours. It's not just your conversion story that speaks of God's work within you. If you're a believer, everyday life provides examples of God's faithfulness through His provision, guidance, love and protection. If you aren't journaling or blogging, can I challenge you to do so? There are lives that can be forever changed by the stories God has given you, including your own.

It's never too late to take part in the 2009 Scripture Memory Challenge. If you're interested, stop by Beth Moore's blog.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

200th Post! It Must be Time for a Giveaway! = )

Blessings on this Monday morning! I'm quite amazed to tell you today marks my 200th post! Who would have thought I would have so much to say!? Since occasions such as this one are special, I'm celebrating with a little giveaway.

First, this darling red apron with polka dots, rick-rack trim and a scalloped edge. Whether you wear it daily as you prepare meals for your family, or save it for a special event, you'll be the cutest cook in town! Next, is a charming decorative plate with a wonderful reminder to "Sweeten Each Day with Love." Don't you love that? What good advice for all of us.

One of the best ways I know to sweeten someones day is to surprise them with a little plate of home-made treats. What kind of treats? (I'm so glad you asked!) Chocolate, of course! How about this sweet little cookbook of all things Chocolate from Gooseberry Patch! Small enough to tuck in your purse, yet loaded with incredibly tasty recipes. Yum!

Feel free to enter twice by doing both if you'd like! Send your comments anytime between now and Wednesday night at 6:00 pm Eastern. I'll draw a winner sometime that night. Here's hoping you win! = )

Happy Mother's Day!

A heartfelt wish to all of you Moms today for a very special Mother's Day. What an incredible blessing and honor we've been given. I hope those you love make a special fuss over you today...and that they shower you with love and sweetness in appreciation for all you do.

For those of you who find this day to be a difficult one, I'm praying for you. It could be that you lost your Mom or can't be with her today. Maybe you're a Mom whose child is far away, either of distance or of heart. Perhaps you're a Mom who has walked the unthinkable road of losing a child. You may be one who aches with longing to be a Mom. Whatever the case, sweet one...my heart truly goes out to you, as do my prayers.

On this special day, I honor my Mom, Shirley. She and I spent the day together yesterday celebrating and we had such a wonderful time. I love her so. Today, we'll be honoring my Mother-in-law, Millie. She'll turn 89 years old a week from today, so we feel extraordinarily blessed that we've gotten yet one more year to celebrate her. Truly an amazing gift. (Speaking of amazing gifts, due to a college travel schedule that places Brennan in the area, he'll actually be here sometime tonight! I can think of nothing better for Mother's Day!) = )

I read a beautiful story many years ago. As I began to search for it to share with you, I discovered it is believed to have been written by Erma Bombeck.

A Child's Angel

Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born. One day he asked God: "They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"
GOD replied, "Among the many angels, I chose one for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you." The child said"But tell me, here in Heaven, I don't do anything else but sing and smile, that's enough for me to be happy." GOD said "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. And you will feel your angel's love and be happy." The child continued, "And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me, if I don't know the language that men talk?" GOD said "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak." The child then asked, "And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?" God assured, "Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray." The child then asked, "I've heard that on earth there are bad men. Who will protect me?" God replied, "Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its life." The child said, "But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore." God said, "Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way for you to come back to me, even though I will always be next to you." At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be heard. And the child in a hurry asked softly: "Oh God, if I am about to leave now, please tell me my angel's name." God's response...."Your angel's name is of no importance, you will simply call her 'Mommy'."

One Wish for You - A Review and Giveaway

Recently, I was given an opportunity to review this lovely book by Celia Whitler. The moment I opened the package, I just knew I was in for a treat. One Wish for You is a book of gratitude and celebration. Think of all the women who have had an impact on your life. If given the opportunity to wish one thing on their behalf, what would you say? Celia Whitler answers this question beautifully amidst perfectly selected scripture and breathtaking photography.

As I read each page, God brought to mind a number of special women who had influenced my life. What an opportunity for praise! I finished this book with a heart overflowing with joy and thankfulness. Just in case that wasn't reason enough to love it, there is a CD tucked inside with music by the very talented author that continues to echo this theme. This would make a perfect Mother's Day gift for your Mom, or any woman who has helped to shape your life.

The publisher was kind enough to give me a copy of this book to pass along to one of you! All comments received on this post between now and Saturday evening at 5:00 pm (Eastern time), will be entered. I'll draw a winner sometime later Saturday evening. = ) Here's hoping you win!

Divine Appointments

Have you ever had the privilege of meeting (in person) a blog friend? I know a number of you met through conferences or events such as She Speaks or the Siesta Fiesta. Others have planned special trips to meet a blog friend for lunch, for a day, or even a weekend together. While I’ve been privileged to speak to a few of my blog friends by e-mail and telephone, I have yet to meet any of them personally. This week, however, God provided a special opportunity …a “next best thing” if you will.

My son, Brennan is currently traveling with a team of students from his college. They are conducting week-long Christian drama seminars with high schools in various parts of the country. This week finds him at the high school attended by the son of a blog friend…Elaine of Peace for the Journey! On Monday, he met her son, Colton. Yesterday, he met her. She sent me a precious e-mail and then this:

My immediate response…tears. There was something so beautiful in the way God’s hand allowed for such a meeting. The sight of a friend and fellow Mom who has become quite dear to me here in blogworld, sharing a moment and showing love to my sweet boy touched me so. Tom and I had just spoken to him by phone the night before and we’re both missing him badly right now. It's been nearly two months since we last saw him and that's simply too long!

About a year ago, I met Elaine (via her blog). We soon realized we shared a number of commonalities. Her oldest son, Nick is Brennan’s age, which meant she and I had walked simultaneously the very difficult path of letting go of our firstborns. She too was from Kentucky. In fact, she grew up in the little town of Wilmore, home of the college Brennan attended last year. Not only was it her college as well, her Dad was (and remains) a professor at the associated seminary. Her Mom for many years, was the seminary registrar. She told me that among other things, she and Brennan enjoyed chatting about Wilmore. = )

Brennan has heard me talk about Elaine on a number of occasions. Many of her posts have impacted me and my walk with the Lord. She is not only an extremely gifted writer, the words that flow from her pen are truly anointed. I have often shared her posts with him (and others). I invite you to take a moment to visit her, too. Not only do I trust you’ll be blessed, I suspect you’ll go back again and again. (Thank you again, dear Elaine for spending a few moments with my boy and for sharing them with me. Hoping one day I'll get to meet you, too!)

Constantly amazed by God’s hand,
and the tie that binds us all…
Tracy

Celebrate with Me!

I'm excited to say today marks a bit of a milestone...it's my 100th post!!! I had no clue, when I stumbled upon blogging (via Beth Moore) just how much it would impact my life!

My Cup Runneth Over was born out of an earnest prayer to share God's love and encouragement with others.

For quite some time, I had sensed a longing to reach beyond those I was encountering on a daily basis -- at work, on my bus, in my neighborhood, even at my church.
So many people are hurting, and in need of God's love...through a smile, a kind word or gesture, or taking the time to pray. My heart (whose blessings are many) overflows with joy and gratitude, and longs to serve the Lord, by serving others, and that certainly includes you! That is why I started blogging, and that remains the same today, 100 posts later!

What I never expected, however, was how much you, in turn would share God's love and encouragement with me! Far beyond that...you have challenged me, humbled me, rejoiced with me, prayed for me, overwhelmed me with your kindness and generosity, and strengthened me by your example. Most of all, you've helped me love Jesus more than ever before. Thank you. I am beyond humbled you have made me a small part of your life. I am truly overflowing with gratitude that God has made you a part of mine.

Though we may never have the opportunity to meet face-to-face (in this lifetime), just wait until we all get to Heaven! Can you imagine!? Wow!

I want to celebrate by sharing this Willow Tree Friendship Angel with one of you. I wish I could give one to each of you, but alas the budget dictates that I only have one. Please leave a comment between now and Monday evening (10/27) at midnight. I will draw a name and post the winner on Tuesday.

With love overflowing,
Tracy

Family Fun + Sweet Deals = Great Weekend!

Greetings! Hope this finds you well. I had hoped to have this posted yesterday, but didn't quite make it! We had an absolute blast with my nieces and nephews this past weekend. We were joined by Brennan’s sweetheart, Brianna and her Mom. (My nieces were absolutely thrilled because they adore Bri.) In between watching (not-so) spooky movies, we enjoyed fun party food, made oreo spiders, danced around like crazy, then later, decorated pumpkins (a bit too early in the month to carve them). It was awesome to hear such joy and laughter in our house (that has been far too quiet lately!)

These are my nieces, Blaire and Jordyn with Bri.
The oreo spiders we made were so cute. I especially got a kick out of Bri’s. She sent this picture to Brennan from her phone (so sweet!)

Blaire with her pumpkin…crazy and creative…just like her!

Josh, who’s all boy and who loves “scary stuff,” made his the Joker from Batman.

Girly-girl Jordyn made a Little Bo Peep pumpkin. With a little help from Bri’s Mom, Lisa, she even painted a little sheep on the back. Adorable!
Sweet, sweet guys…Blake & Josh

The only thing that could have made Saturday any better would have been having Brennan and Brooke (my other niece) there, too! It was a great time for all of us. Looking forward to having them over again...soon! ☺

Sunday was fun in a completely different way. After preparing lunch, I exercised my preferred method of "good stewardship" by taking a trip to my favorite thrift store! I first began shopping at thrift stores when Brennan was a baby. It’s positively crazy the kind of deals you can get. These were my finds for the day...So that you can fully appreciate what you see in this photo, here is a rundown:

Red corduroy button down (Eddie Bauer)
Charcoal gray (wool) cardigan sweater
Red cowl neck sweater (Coldwater Creek)
Black cardigan sweater
Ivory pullover sweater
Navy Blue (Naturalizer) Shoes (still with department store price tags)
Warren Kimble Americana Snowman Plate (ltd edition, still in box)
3 Assorted Flower Vases
You need to know I'm not really a label girl. I simply look for clothes I like, that fit and will work with what I already have. I do however, get especially excited when I realize I've chosen something that happens to be a really nice brand for a ridiculously low price. Wanna guess how much I spent?

$28.00!

Hard to believe, isn't it? With everyone tightening their belt economically, there is no better time to check out a thrift or consignment store in your area. You can cut your clothing cost in half, and sometimes even to a fourth! Who couldn't benefit from that kind of savings!?

Part of the fun (for me) is truly the hunt. My absolute favorite of all finds a few summers back was a London Fog trenchcoat (with zip-out winter lining) that looked like brand new...for $2.00!!! Not a thing was wrong with it, in fact I've worn it for three winters now! Amazing! Are you a thrift or consignment store shopper? I'd love to hear what treasures you've found.

Better run! Have a wonderful Tuesday!

A Gracious Second Chance

I was reading Angie’s post last week on Laced with Grace called "Obedience." It's a beautiful story about second chances, and it brought to mind a gracious second chance the Lord gave to me a number of years ago. Before I continue, we need to take a trip back to 1975 (yes, I realize some of you weren’t even born yet, but try and imagine with me...).

It was late August as I arrived at school for my first day of 5th grade. I walked down the hall until I reached the two classrooms, one of which would be mine. As I scanned the student list posted outside the first classroom, I didn’t see my name. I walked across the hall to the other student list. I immediately realized the teacher’s name was not who I expected. There had obviously been a staffing change over the summer, and I had a brand new teacher. I walked in the classroom and was warmly greeted by a tall, slender, attractive woman. I remember immediately noticing her sparkly eyes and beautiful smile. Her name was Miss Bailey.

Like most kids, I was extremely impressionable at the age of 10 and from that first day, I wanted to emulate her. She was young and full of joy and creativity. Her patience seemed endless and I soon discovered she was an incredible teacher. Even the kids who had previously been more challenging were different under her teaching. (It's possible the years have diminished my memory, but I have little or no recollection of anyone getting into trouble.) We all loved her and we knew she loved us, and we wanted to do our very best to please her. I don’t ever remember enjoying school more.

Things continued to progress well as we made our way through the school year. One winter morning, after the Pledge of Allegiance, she shared that she prayed for us every morning. She then said "I thought maybe today we could all pray together." She asked us to bow our heads and then she prayed that God would be with each of us, that He would help us to pay attention, to treat each other kindly and to do our very best for Him. I remember how much I loved that. My family at that time (though moral and loving), was not walking with the Lord. This continued on for a couple of weeks. Before too long, other kids were even volunteering to pray. There was only one problem…I attended a public school.

At the time, I had no concept that praying there was considered "wrong," until one day, with much grace and respect, she explained that we weren’t allowed to do that in class anymore. I remember being a bit disappointed and confused, because it didn’t seem at all like a bad thing to me. A few weeks later, in early spring, she came in our classroom one day and said, I’m very sorry to tell you I’ll be leaving and won’t be here to finish out the school year. After reminding us the importance of being kind, doing our best and behaving well for our new teacher, she was gone...and we were heartbroken. (It was a number of years later before I made the connection between the prayer issue and her departure.) We finished out the year with a substitute teacher who was young and very sweet, but it was never quite the same.

As years continued on, I began to realize the profound impact she had on my life. I thought of her often and longed to talk to her, to know how she was doing, and to thank her for being such a strong and Godly influence.

Then, one day in 1995, because of a scheduling error with my son’s pediatrician, I found myself at their Cincinnati office, rather than the northern Kentucky office less than a mile from our home. Brennan must have only been there for an immunization or check-up, because afterwards, we stopped for lunch at a nearby McDonalds. As we were eating, a woman walked in who looked somewhat familiar. Along with her, were two beautiful little girls of a different nationality, both of whom looked to be under the age of 5. For the longest time, I couldn’t figure out why she looked familiar and then it hit me…she looked like Miss Bailey! I was trying to look at her without staring, reasoning back and forth in my mind…"Could that be her?" to "It can’t be her!" The little girls with her were younger than my son (who was 6 at the time). The math just didn’t add up. If Miss Bailey had kids, they would undoubtedly be older than that. I was still debating with myself when I saw her smile…that same sparkly eyed smile from 20 years before. That’s when I knew it was her. I tried to make eye contact, in the hopes that she might recognize me. What was I saying!? Last time she had seen me, I was only 10, and now, I was 30! A few more moments went by, and although I so badly wanted to talk with her, I just couldn’t gather the courage to do it. (How silly is that!?)

Brennan and I got into our car and headed for home. Within moments, the regret settled in. It made me heartsick that God had provided an opportunity I had long hoped for…and I completely blew it. I thought about looking her up in the phone book, but realized I hadn’t the faintest clue of her married name. It remained on my mind for several days and I expressed my remorse to the Lord over and over. I told Him if ever I saw Miss Bailey again, I’d never let an opportunity like that pass me by.

Later that same week, our church was hosting a concert by Dallas Holm. (For those who aren’t familiar, he was a popular contemporary Christian singer of the 80’s and 90’s.) The concert had been promoted on local Christian radio, so we were expecting a large turnout. We arrived quite early in order to get good seats. Once settled, I turned around to watch for any of our friends who might need a place to sit. Would you believe directly behind me, was none other than Miss Bailey!? I quickly turned back around, wide-eyed. I had told my hubby about what happened at McDonalds and he must have seen my wide eyes because he mouthed to me "What’s wrong?" I mouthed back (pointing through the back of the pew) "That’s her! That’s Miss Bailey!" (then, his eyes grew wide!) There was still quite some time before the concert, so I knew what I needed to do. I took a deep breath and turned around…

We spent the next 15-20 minutes catching up. I was able to tell her how much I appreciated her powerful influence in my life, how much I learned from her. I told her my memories from her class were so precious and that I knew the Lord had drawn me through her example. She said our class was her very first, right out of college. She made reference to the fact that the school wasn’t too happy with her about those morning prayers.
A few months after her departure, she had married and begun teaching at a Christian school, where she remained until she and her husband began having children of their own, four boys to be exact. Her youngest was a high school senior. The previous year, they had adopted the two beautiful little girls from Guatemala. Her life, she said, was so very blessed. They were actually a month away from a move to Alaska, where her husband had received a job transfer. She was anxious to see what adventures awaited them. I asked if she ever planned to return to teaching, she said she might when her daughters were old enough to attend school. As she spoke, it struck me that though a little older, her face was just as radiant as it was in 1975.

It’s been 13 years since God graciously orchestrated that meeting. Her daughters are nearly grown now. I’m not sure if her family is still in Alaska, or if she ever did return to teaching, but I have peace. It thrills my heart to think there are other students, possibly as far as Alaska, who have been impacted (perhaps for eternity) by the example of one extraordinary teacher.

Celebrating Three Very Special Dads!

Meet my Dad, Clyde...
Some things I'd like to tell you about him...
HE'S HARD-WORKING
: He has owned and operated his
small construction company for over 40 years.
HE LOVES TO HELP OTHERS: He would do anything
in the world for you (and there are many things
he does well!) He often drops his own agenda to come
to the aid of one of his kids, a friend or neighbor.
HE IS PATIENT, GENTLE & QUIET: Few things make
my Dad happier than sitting on the side of a lake fishing.
During winter months when he can’t fish,
he and my Mom love to work enormous jigsaw puzzles.
HE IS TENDER HEARTED: My Dad loves to watch
chick flicks (oops, I mean) sweet, sentimental movies.
HE IS FAMILY ORIENTED: Loves spending time with his family.
HE ALSO LOVES Bluegrass and Southern Gospel music
(I think Gaither DVDs play 24/7 at their house!)

Among my favorite memories:
Dad waking us kids at 4:00 am with loud Bluegrass music

on the days he would take the whole family fishing.
* * * * *
Our late night trips to UDF for strawberry milkshakes
(after the other kids were sleeping).
* * * * *
Mowing the lawn together. We would
divide up the yard and then race
each other to see who could finish first.

* * * * *
All us kids wrestling and roughousing
with Dad before going to bed.

I love you Dad…Happy Father’s Day!
(Happy Birthday, too!)

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Tom’s Dad…my “Daddy-in-Law,” Bob... Some things I'd like to tell you about him...
HE IS VERY GEN
EROUS:
to his family, but also
to the poor, handicapped and others in need.
HE IS A MAN OF FAITH: He loves God and
you can see that in how he lives his life.
Every day begins with prayer.
HE IS VERY WISE: He reads several newspapers each day
and loves to talk sports, business, stocks & politics.
HE HAS A TREMENDOUS BUSINESS SENSE: Although retired,
he still has a wealth of knowledge and new ideas
to help others in business.
PHENOMENAL COOK: Even in his mid-80's, he still
gets such joy from cooking huge meals for the family. For years,
we've been spoiled by his homemade vegetable soup,
roast pork, stuffing and raisin cake!

My Favorite Memory:
When Tom and I were dating, he brought me home to
meet his parents. The first thing Bob said to me was,
“You know, when we adopted Tommy and his two sisters,
we told them, we’ll take any baby you have, as long
as they don’t have red hair and freckles.” (As you’ve seen
in my picture above… that would describe me…)
I smiled nervously. His wink and smile immediately gave way
to a chuckle. I knew right away we were going
to get along famously...and we do.
Like putting aside the insignificant
(dishes, housework, etc.) and delighting in the everyday,
fleeting moments with Brennan. For him, coming home
from work to find me playing a game or reading a
story to Brennan beat having a hot meal on the table,
hands down, every time. What a blessing and gift!
Brennan is now 19, and we still cherish our moments together.
Our little family is very close, definitely a tribute
to Tom’s loving example in our home.
Even more than simply being there, he excels in
encouraging, guiding, inspiring, praying

Love you Pop! Happy Father's Day!

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

Lastly, my sweetheart and best friend, Brennan’s Dad, Tom
I remember thinking before we were married
what a great Dad he would be. (I couldn’t have
known just how great!) Always one to stop and savor
life’s experiences, I’ve learned so much by
watching him as a Dad.
and supporting Brennan in every way he can.

We love you, Sweetie!
We’re so proud of you and we thank God for you.
Happy Father’s Day!

A Loving Reminder from God

Don’t you love experiencing God in the midst of the ordinary? Those moments when He speaks through a beautiful sunset, a friend's encouraging word or a vibrant rainbow, and you just know it was something He meant especially for you?

One of my favorite of these such moments occurred several years ago. My husband, Tom and I were both in the midst of some challenging situations at the time and were feeling particularly overwhelmed. Among other things, there were major difficulties going on at work for Tom. In addition, several months prior, we had joined the youth staff which meant each of us were caring for our own small group of 8-10 middle school students. Although our hearts were willing, we were completely out of our comfort zone in this new and unfamiliar territory. (Our own son was just then in middle school for goodness sake!) There was much we didn't know. Add to this, one of our biggest challenges was helping to look after Tom’s elderly Aunt, who lived next door.

God had divinely placed us here for the purpose of helping to care for Aunt Helen. A widow with no children of her own, she had practically helped raise Tom and his sisters, and she had always been so good to me. Being nearby to help her was truly a privilege, yet it could also be quite a challenge. She was 81 years old at the time and though her petite frame suggested frailty, it spoke nothing of her legendary determination. She took great joy in doing something challenging (and often dangerous) just to prove to herself (and to you) that she could.

It was January or February in one of those winters where we kept getting snow, just a few inches at a time, for what seemed like weeks. Shoveling the driveway became almost a daily task, in an effort to keep Aunt Helen from slipping and breaking a leg or hip, should she take a notion to walk outside (which she often did).

We tried everything to keep her off that driveway…we got her newspaper early each morning, we got her groceries and we picked up medicine. However, since Tom and I were both working, there were often hours when no one was home and the mail was delivered during that time. Despite our pleas, and offers to bring her mail as soon as we got home from work, many days we returned to find her mailbox already empty, because she insisted on walking that driveway and getting it herself.

And so…with every snowfall, whether a little or a lot, we were over there shoveling and salting like mad. With everything else that was going on at the time, this typically minor chore grew to be a bit of a thorn in our side. We were long past enjoying its beauty. In fact, every time it started to snow, we would find ourselves groaning.

Well, on this particular Sunday, I woke up very early – well before my alarm. It was still dark outside and I realized Tom was already up and out of bed. When I didn’t see him anywhere in the house, I peeked outside and spotted him (yet again) shoveling snow next door. (We had gotten around an inch overnight.) I made my way through our garage and opened the side door just a few feet away from where he was working. "Good morning," I said…He greeted me with a smile and said, "Grab a flashlight and your coat and come out here…I want to show you something..."

A few moments later, I returned as instructed. He took my hand and led me to the end of Aunt Helen's driveway. I turned on the flashlight and there, in the peaceful silence of that early Sunday morning, this is what we saw...Now a logical person might assume it was pure coincidence that these tire tracks (probably from the newspaper delivery truck) formed two hearts. Instead, what we saw was a blessing from the Lord, spoken straight to our weary souls saying, "I know your struggles, I see your faithfulness, I care about what burdens you, I love you and I'm right here with you."

It's hard to put into words the encouragement that flooded our hearts that morning, truly when we needed it most. We stood there for several moments, not saying anything, just taking it in and thanking the Lord. Then I went to get my camera to capture this moment I didn't ever want to forget. It still encourages me every time I look at this photo. I pray it does the same for you this day.

...May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by His grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. ~ 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 (NIV)

The Blessing of My Mom

I’d like to introduce you to someone special…my Mom, Shirley. She was the 6th of 13 kids born to my grandparents and named after Shirley Temple. She became my Mom just days after she and my Dad celebrated their first wedding anniversary in 1965.

For 3 ½ years, I was their only child. I have amazing memories of those days. Mom spent countless hours every day reading stories, playing games with me and sewing clothes for my dolls. Once, someone gave me a dollhouse, and she created all the furnishings from cardboard, construction paper and scraps of fabric! I was so blessed to have those precious years with her.

Life at my house began to get quite busy as my siblings came along, one by one. Although we didn’t have hours and hours like we once had, Mom was always doing something to make me (and all of my siblings) feel special. Most mornings, we woke to a hot breakfast and always, an amazing, home-cooked meal for dinner. I would sit at the kitchen table and she would help me with homework while she cooked. Sometimes, she would surprise me with something special she had made for me, like a new pair of pajamas or a new little purse. Upon occasion, we’d bake a cake or watch something on TV together after the other kids had gone to bed.

When my siblings and I got a little older, Mom began trying out some new hobbies. She took classes on cake decorating and oil painting, both of which she did very well. She was also really good at things like crochet and cross-stitch. She’s always been quite crafty and loves to create with her hands.

Her greatest talent (which she learned from her Mom) is undoubtedly quilt-making. In fact, I would say quilts are her love language. She has made scores of them, each one a beautiful and one-of-a-kind treasure. When my Grandma (her Mom) passed away, she took her dresses and created beautiful quilted wall-hangings for many family members. Last year, when my son, Brennan graduated from high school, she presented him with this photo quilt, capturing his most cherished high school memories. She had worked on it for months...Priceless!

I’m so blessed God chose her to be my Mom. She is precious beyond words. (And you can only imagine what an awesome Grandma she is, too!) I love her and honor her today!

Thankful Thursday!

This is my first time participating in Thankful Thursday. What a great idea! This week, I have much to be thankful for…

♥ My precious hubby, Tom. In the ebb and flow of many years of marriage, we’re in an especially sweet season right now (despite many potential stress-factors) and I’m loving every moment of it. Thank you, Lord for the countless ways Tom shows his love for me. I'm incredibly blessed.

♥ God presented two huge opportunities for my son to share his faith this week on his college campus and praise God, he jumped at the chance! On Monday, after a lecture, he stayed after class to talk to his Biology professor about his faith. Yesterday, there was a large Pro-Life rally taking place. Not far from there, he noticed a small Pro-Choice display. He approached the person working there. He engaged in a conversation and was able to share and debate in a very kind, respectful way. Our prayer is that he gave that person some new insights to consider. Thank you Lord, for presenting these opportunities to my son, and for his courage and obedience to your promptings. (I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
~3 John 1:4)

♥ This week, we’re hosting three great guys in our home. They are serving nearby with the Academy of Arts, a ministry we love. Our son has taken summer-long mission trips with two of the three guys, and he loves them like brothers. We think the world of all of them and absolutely love having them here. Thank you Lord, for letting me experience “big family life” this week, and for seeing the joy their presence brings to my son.

♥ The inspiring beauty of Spring…everything is blooming! Thank you Lord, for this amazing season of renewal.

♥ Today is the last day of a very challenging project I've been on since late February (Can you hear that Hallelujah chorus in the background??) Thank you Lord, for humbling and strengthening me through this process.

♥ The safe return of a friend’s daughter from her deployment in Iraq. Thank you Lord, for your protection of this Mommy, daughter, sister & friend.

and finally…

♥ For new friends I’m making in Blogworld! Thank you Lord, for the encouraging words and lessons learned through “sisters” I’ve never met face-to-face.

The Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with joy…~ Psalm 126:3

May this Thursday find you blessed...

Welcome to my Life...

Maybe that’s a good place to start…If I may, I’d like to tell you a little of my story. I’m married to a wonderful man, my very best friend, Tom. We met way back in 1983 when he was working as a disc jockey at a Cincinnati radio station and I called to request a song. There was immediate chemistry and a short time later, we planned to meet. On the day we actually met (face-to-face), my little sister had gone up and down our street inviting all the kids in the neighborhood to come and see the “radio man” who was coming to meet her sister. It’s a sight I will never forget….10-15 little kids sitting side-by-side, all along our front yard, cheering for him as he pulled down the street. That very likely could have been what “sealed the deal,” because Tom and I immediately began dating and a little over a year later, we were married.

We were happily enjoying life for a number of years, 3 ½ to be exact, when we learned we were expecting. What an amazing, exciting time! In January of 1989, we welcomed a beautiful baby boy, Brennan into our hearts and lives. Life was (and continues to be) blessed. Through a series of people and circumstances that could have only been orchestrated by God, my husband gave his heart to the Lord, and I recommitted my life to the Lord as well just before Brennan started first grade. We enrolled him in a Christian school (where he remained for all 12 years). By God’s grace, Brennan immediately adapted to an active church life and attending a Christian school. (He not only adapted to it, he loved it!) He has truly been the greatest blessing of our lives. A leader with exceptional character, tremendously talented, humble, sensitive, tons of fun and who will (to this day) hug and kiss his Mom or Dad right in front of his buddies! Our little family has always been close and God has blessed Brennan with some incredible mentors over the years that have really helped sharpen him into a passionate young man of faith. He is now a college student in South Carolina pursuing Christian media and Theatre arts. We believe God has big things in store for him.

Meanwhile, Tom and I are living life, loving each other and loving the Lord. We both work for the same law firm, which means we get to ride to work together each day and even have lunch together most days. We are so blessed. Tom and I are both what you could call (in the words of Kevin Leman), “Joy Spreaders.” We love to encourage others and show the love of Christ in unexpected ways. It is my hope that this blog will be a place of encouragement, being real and yes spreading joy and love to others! Looking forward to new friends and (in the words of Beth Moore) blog “siestas!” May you be blessed this day…

Tracy

…I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
